The overhead conveyor : the multifunctional solution for intralogistics processes
What is an overhead conveyor?
An overhead conveyor – also known as a suspended conveyor – is an intralogistics system designed to transport items and materials within a warehouse. These items move overhead, without interfering with ground-level operations. There are various types of overhead conveyors, each offering a solution tailored to the specific needs of different industries.
Beyond its basic transport function, it can also serve as a fully integrated order preparation system, capable of identifying, sequencing, and storing items. Thanks to its unique aluminum structure, the overhead conveyor can be expanded as needed and adapted into various transport and sorting systems, regardless of the warehouse’s constraints or layout.
Fully controllable and configurable via warehouse management software (such as Open WCS), overhead conveyors can adjust their speed and sorting algorithms based on operational activity. They are a major asset for enhancing warehouse performance and optimizing intralogistics.
How does the overhead conveyor work?
The overhead conveyor consists of rails and a drive system to which hangers, trolleys or hooks are attached, depending on the goods to be transported. It can be moved in two different ways :
Automatic
The overhead conveyor is motorized to enable the movement of a high volume of items at a steady and continuous pace. Companies increasingly turn to this solution, especially in the retail and e-commerce sectors, where large volumes are common.
Manual
In this case, the overhead conveyor is often gravity-powered: the goods are moved by their own weight. Otherwise, human intervention is required. It is commonly used for temporary storage or for transferring items from one area to another. This option is the most economical and energy-efficient.
Low maintenance cost
Saving floor space
Limits the risk of musculo-skeletal disorders
Multiple features
Complete and personalized configuration
Unitary and respectful treatment of articles
Scalable system by adding modules
Better hygiene
Optimal connection to other systems
Overall performance increase
What are its features?
Combined with additional automatic systems, the overhead conveyor becomes the heart of intralogistics processes and can be used for storage, order picking, sorting or the production line.
Preparation
Grâce à des puces RFID intégrées au système il est possible de tracer un article de A à Z, de regrouper des commandes, des les orienter vers leur zone d’expédition sans jamais interrompre le flux.
Sorting system
By sorting items directly on hangers or placing them in pockets, complex and fast sorting can be achieved using predefined algorithms. The overhead conveyor is thus capable of sorting and sequencing items individually or in groups.
Dynamic storage and buffering
The overhead conveyor coupled with an overhead storage system enables fast-moving items to be stored temporarily. They are then available very quickly when needed, without human intervention.
Supply and dispatch
The overhead conveyor can be used as a supply system on production and assembly lines. It orders and streamlines processes to increase productivity.
The different types of overhead conveyors
